From the Elkins end of Pleasant Lake, Kearsarge stands straight up out of the water, and New London arranges itself along the ridge above it. JFK Landscape Design works that ridge and shoreline the whole year through — mowing and edging in the green season, cleanups at both ends of it, and plowing once the lake goes hard and driveways start to disappear. Roads up here are steep, curved and shaded, which makes them slow to melt and worth clearing early. A lawn that holds a straight line across a slope is a good day's work; so is a drive that is black at daybreak. Both belong to the same habit of mind.
