New London runs along a ridge with Kearsarge on one side and Sunapee water on the other, which means wind, and which means the snow arrives sideways and drifts where it pleases. Four Seasons Outdoor Services meets it with plows, shovels and sand, opening driveways up the hill roads before the town has stirred. When the melt finally takes hold the same properties get mowed, trimmed, edged and raked out, and the beds get put back in order for a lake-country summer. A cleared drive in a January dark and a crisp cut edge in July are the same accomplishment wearing different clothes. Both are worth doing properly.
