The work begins in sound — a plate compactor settling pavers into their bed, a screed dragged flat across wet concrete, a plow blade scraping down to bare pavement while Milford is still dark. Stacy Outdoor Services builds and keeps ground in the granite town on the Souhegan: patios and walkways set stone by stone, retaining walls squared against a hillside, slabs and foundations poured, sites prepped and graded, stumps pulled, lawns mowed, leaves carried off before the first hard freeze. There is a plain, physical satisfaction in what that leaves behind — a wall still holding its line come mud season, a driveway opened before the coffee is poured. From the Souhegan valley and the Monadnock foothills through southern and central New Hampshire and north into the Lakes Region, the ground here changes its mind four times a year, and this is work that meets it each time.
