Milford goes by the Granite Town, and a deep January cold snap earns it the name — the air turns hard and bright, and powder squeaks under every boot downtown. Allocca Snow Plowing works through those brittle mornings, when the snow is dry enough to blow off a roof and drift right back where it was cleared. The Souhegan runs beneath the Swing Bridge with ice crusting its edges, and the old quarry hills around town sit white and silent. A well-plowed driveway in that weather is a kind of warmth: bare blacktop, edges pushed back square, the car free to leave on time. Granite holds its shape, and so does a bank of snow pushed up right.
