A driveway cleared down to the pavement gives a household back its morning — the car that pulls out without a fight, the kid who makes the bus, the front step that asks nothing of anyone. That is the work PlowNH does in Merrimack, New Hampshire, a town stretched along the river between Nashua and Manchester, where white pine holds its load over long wooded drives and the wind coming up the valley finds every open lot. Plowing here is night work: headlights swinging across a dooryard at four in the morning, the blade opening one clean lane and then another, banks pushed back and squared off so the next storm has somewhere to go. By the time the sky turns gray over the Merrimack, the blacktop is dark and wet and the day can simply start.
