Litchfield lies long and narrow along the east bank of the Merrimack, a strip of sandy river-terrace farmland where corn rows and orchard lines run down toward the water and pine woods close in behind them. Corpe Outdoor Services works that ground on its own terms — weekly mowing and clean-cut edging through the growing months, mulch and stone set into beds, gardens designed and planted, shrubs pruned back, turf aerated, dethatched, overseeded and topdressed until it thickens and holds. There is a plain satisfaction in the finished pass: a lawn leveled and drained so rain finally has somewhere to go, a walkway pressure-washed back to its own color, brush cleared off a lot that had begun to forget it was a yard. When the river valley goes white, the plow runs Litchfield, Hudson, Londonderry, Manchester and Nashua, opening driveways to that pale early light. Spring and fall cleanups bracket the whole year, and the ground gets handed forward, tended, into whatever comes next.
