The work is snow: plowing driveways, dooryards, and turnarounds while the sky is still that blue-gray hour before dawn, cutting walkways down to the step, sanding the grades that glaze over where the sun never reaches, coming back to push away the hard windrow the town plow leaves at the end of the drive. There is a plain, honest pleasure in a finished drive — banks squared off, gravel dark and open, the whole place standing ready for whatever the next storm decides to do.
