There is real satisfaction in the finish: dark mulch banked clean against a foundation, the stripe pattern laid straight, sprinklers throwing silver over a lawn at six in the morning. Then the light shortens, the pines take on that flat gray-blue, and the snow plowing begins — driveways off Route 125 and the back roads toward Great Pond opened up while the rest of town is still under blankets. It is unglamorous work, and it leaves a place looking cared for, which is the whole point.
