The work starts as sound — a mower's low pull along a dooryard, the scrape of a plow blade finding gravel, the tamp and shift of stone set by hand until a retaining wall stops moving for good. Home-Land Landscaping works out of Chesham Road in Harrisville, where brick mill buildings stand in the water of Nubanusit Brook and the back roads climb away through hardwood toward Monadnock. They draw up landscape designs and build the hard bones of a property — patios, walkways, retaining walls, outdoor fireplaces — rake the yards clean in spring and again when the maples let go, add a rail or a ramp where a doorway asks for one, and push back snow and ice across the Monadnock Region all winter. What they leave behind is plain and good to look at: an edge holding its line, a stone seam tight enough to shed rain, a drive opened to bare gravel while the pond is still dark.
