Mathewson Companies works that ground directly — excavation and grading, road construction, lot development, drainage and utilities, sewer and septic systems, the shaping of dams, ponds, and stream beds — with site maintenance, seasonal cleanups, and brush clearing, and a materials yard sending out crushed stone, sand, loam, and fill. There is a plain satisfaction in a grade that finally sheds water the way the hillside always intended, in a new road holding its crown through mud season, in a pond edge that looks as though it had been there since the ice left. Winter turns the work to snow removal — lots and drives opened while the pines are still blue with dark, the pavement showing black again before the town wakes.
