Before the sun clears the water off Hampton Beach, the trucks are already rolling out past the salt marsh, headlights throwing long cones across a lot that will look like a different place by dusk. This is excavation on the New Hampshire Seacoast — commercial and residential site work, waterlines and sewer lines, septic and enviro systems, demolition and hammering, helical pilings driven down until a foundation has something honest to stand on. Grade is measured with a GPS rover, and there is a real satisfaction in the moment a rough lot pulls flat and true, every fall of the land finally going where you meant it to go. Loam, gravel and sand come in by the truckload; when winter turns the marsh grass silver, the same machines take up plowing and snow removal, opening lots and driveways while the ocean wind is still stacking drift along the treeline. What gets left behind is the kind of work you stop noticing on purpose — a yard that drains, a drive that holds, ground that behaves itself all the way through a Seacoast year.
