In late May the marsh behind Timber Swamp Road turns a green so sudden it looks like the tide carried it in, and Hampton begins asking for its yards back. Bayberry & Company works the full arc of that year on the New Hampshire seacoast — drawing landscape designs that account for a site's own attributes and how it shifts from month to month, then building them: hardscapes, gardens, ponds, and grading for local storm runoff. There is fine gardening in it too, the close work of planning and planting annuals, trimming and pruning, and mowing a lawn down to one clean, unarguable edge — and vertical gardens for the walls that would otherwise hold nothing at all. Cleanups arrive in the shoulder weeks, when oak leaves drift up against a fence line and the beds need to be put right. Then comes winter maintenance: a February storm shoulders in off the Atlantic all night, and by morning the snow is off the drive and the walk, and the place is simply usable again.
