Pauls Plowing

About Pauls Plowing

The coldest stretch of a winter night here comes long after the snow has quit — sky cleared off, moon up, pine shadows laid black across a white drive, and everything setting hard. Pauls Plowing is out in it, running the blade down a driveway while the rest of the road is still asleep. Plowing for drives and lots, walks and steps cleared by hand, salt and sand wherever ice wants to take hold, and another pass when a storm keeps going. The sound of that first cut down a buried drive is the good part of the work. It means the school bus gets by and somebody's morning stays ordinary. Hampstead and the communities around it are on the route.
