Most of the craft is patient and nearly invisible: feeding the soil, correcting its pH, opening it with core aeration and dropping new seed into the holes, then laying barrier treatments along the shrub lines and shaded edges where ticks and mosquitoes wait out the heat. They carry ornamental trees and shrubs through the year, hold the house perimeter against ants and spiders, cut bittersweet and knotweed back off the tree line, and keep deer honest at the garden's edge.
