Grafton has mica in its ground — Isinglass Mountain and the old Ruggles workings glint after rain — and pasture that has been mown one way or another for a very long time. Nature Scapes keeps lawns cut across those back roads, from the water out toward Grafton Pond and Kilton to the dooryards along the Smith River. The work is steady and plain: mowing on a rhythm, trimming whatever the mower cannot reach, edging drives and walks, and the two big cleanups that open and close the year. A rural lawn wants to run wild by the middle of June, and keeping it from doing that is most of the art. When the last pass finishes, the field edge reads as a line instead of a suggestion.
