Goffstown sits where the Piscataquog bends toward Manchester and the twin Uncanoonucs stand watch over the village rooftops — country of granite ledge under thin soil, of hillside lots that have to be persuaded into level ground. Steve Sarette & Son Excavation works that ground directly: hammering and hauling ledge, grading driveways, laying in septic systems and town sewer and water connections, opening up yards and putting lawn where there was only slope and stone. There is real satisfaction in the result — a house lot squared and draining true, a retention pond holding the runoff after a hard rain, a parking lot laid flat and honest, a new lawn taking hold over what used to be bedrock. Come winter their trucks push commercial lots and roads clear while the mill-town streets are still dark and blue. It is heavy, patient work, and it leaves its mark on this corner of southern New Hampshire in the shape of the land itself.
