The stone arch bridge at Gilsum has stood over the Ashuelot longer than anyone's memory of it, and in a January storm the river runs black between white banks. Chris Lane Enterprises plows the hill roads above it, opening drives that climb hard off the valley floor and clearing turnarounds where a truck can actually turn. Cold on those grades makes the snow squeaky and light one night and greasy the next; the route runs either way. Walks come down to bare surface, and the piles go where they will not slide back by morning. When the last of the storm goes out of the sky, the way in and the way out are both clear.
