Cavanaugh and Son works the snow in Franconia, New Hampshire — a town set down under the Franconia Ridge, where the notch funnels weather straight into the valley and the birches stand pale against a paler sky. Their line is snow removal, plain and cold and necessary: the driveway opened while the porch light is still the only light going, the dooryard widened, the banks pushed back far enough that a car can turn without holding its breath. There is a real satisfaction in a lot cleared at first grey — bare pavement, squared corners, a whole storm undone in a handful of passes. They cover Franconia and the towns around it, up the valley and over toward Sugar Hill and Easton, where the roads climb and the drifts have opinions. Come April the ridge lets go, and the ground they kept open all winter comes back up green, none the worse for the weather.
