Epping sits where the roads cross and the Lamprey bends, and its ground has always given something up — clay for the brickyards, gravel for the rail bed, and trees, always trees. JRL Tree Services Construction takes them down when they are finished, trims them back when they crowd a barn or a service drop, and prunes with an eye on how the tree will look ten Aprils from now. Mud season here is loud with wind, and every year it finds the punky ash and the split maple before anyone else does. The storm work is plain — cut, chip, haul, and keep going until a yard that was impassable at dawn is a yard again by supper. There is a particular pride in that last pass with the rake, the moment a place stops looking like an emergency.
