Late summer thins into fall over the Enfield hills, and the work turns with the light — pruning cuts made while the leaves are still reading, limbs cabled and braced before the first hard wind comes down off the ridge. Fox Tree & Landscape Services works out of Enfield, taking down the trees that have outlived their footing, grinding the stumps out after, and handing a yard back its open ground. The rest of the season goes to building: patios and walls set into New Hampshire ledge, shrubs and young trees planted where a screen ought to stand, sightlines opened until the water and the far slope come back into view. It is plain, physical work, and it leaves something you can walk out and stand in — a wall that holds, a canopy shaped to grow, a view a house had forgotten it owned.
