Three in the morning, Route 28 empty, plow lights making a small bright room inside all that falling white — that is the shift. BBZ LLC runs Derry's storms from the top down: clearing driveways, opening walkways, cutting back the wall the town plow leaves across every apron, sanding whatever turns slick. Weather rolls over the hills east of the interstate and settles in for hours, so the route gets run again, and again. Morning finds the pavement bare and the banks pushed square, and the day starts on time. Nobody sees the hours behind that; the open driveway says it well enough.
