Late autumn in Concord is a handoff: the last of the grading gets finished in the low gold light coming off the Merrimack, and then the plow frame comes down off the wall. Wielock Site Work & Landscaping works the ground in a city built on granite — excavation and site prep, drainage cut so water goes where it ought to go, driveways installed and regraded, underground pipe run, foundation stone replaced, and stonework set so square it looks like the hillside decided it. When winter takes the valley, the same trucks are out ahead of the streetlights, opening drives and lots across Concord and the rest of southern New Hampshire before the morning has to move. There is a plain satisfaction in both halves of the year: a yard that drains clean through mud season, a wall of granite that will not shift, a dooryard bare and black at first light.
