Concord wakes under a valley sky that changes its mind by the hour — river fog off the Merrimack at six, hard granite light by nine, and come January a sun so low it barely clears the pines. Jeffrey R Jobel Inc answers that calendar from both ends: trucks loading out of their Concord yard with mulch, crushed rock and stone, loam, garden mix, screened sand, pebbles and hardpack, carried anywhere in New Hampshire and spread wherever the homeowner points; and in the cold months plowing, salting, sanding and shoveling commercial properties so a storm is just weather again. There is a plain pleasure in how each job ends — dark hemlock mulch laid flat and even along a bed, a bald patch leveled back into lawn, a lot scraped down to black pavement before the first car of the morning turns in. The materials belong to the same country they end up in: pine, hemlock and cedar ground fine, stone out of granite hills, loam for the thin spots. Central New Hampshire keeps its shape one load at a time, and the work is glad to be part of that.
