Two seasons matter most in Chesterfield, and they arrive from opposite directions. In summer Spofford Lake holds the warm air and the lawns above it come in thick; EH&P Green mows them, trims the edges, mulches the beds and runs the spring and fall cleanups that keep a yard honest. In winter the wind comes over Wantastiquet and down Route 9 with weather off the Connecticut, and the same trucks are out plowing driveways, shoveling walks and steps, and sanding the steep pitches before anyone has to drive them. Pisgah's woods stand black and quiet through all of it, indifferent to whether a person can get out of their own driveway, which is precisely why someone has to be. There is a particular pleasure in pavement cleared to the blacktop while the house is still dark.
