Charlestown lays out one long, broad Main Street above the Connecticut River, and the lawns along it have the room to be handsome. We mow them, cut the edges where grass meets sidewalk and drive, trim what a mower can't reach, and clear the debris away at both ends of the year. Down in the river valley the growing season starts early and runs generous, so the schedule matters nearly as much as the cut itself. A summer of it has its own rhythm: the smell of grass, the shade of old maples, the tidy line waiting at the end of the day. Good ground, and good work to do on it.
