The work begins with the steady sweep of a spreader and a hand turning over soil where the ground runs thin and cold beneath the pines — Greenturf LLC feeds lawns for a living, and the doing is slow, measured, granular. Center Harbor sits in the narrow gap between Squam and the head of Winnipesaukee, Red Hill standing over the village, lake light coming up off the water all summer, and grass here has to earn its green in a short northern season. Fertilization with the nutrients a lawn actually wants, weed and pest management, mosquito and tick work, and hands-on cultural amendments go down in rounds across the calendar — conventional or organic, whichever the yard is asked to be. By midsummer the reward is plain: color carried unbroken from the roadside to the treeline, and evenings on the grass that belong to the people standing on it.
