When Center Harbor Bay stiffens over in January, the wind comes off the ice and up the hill through town with nothing at all to slow it down. That wind can fill a driveway back in an hour, so we plow with drifting in mind — banks kept low and far back, turnarounds held open, walks and steps shoveled down to bare ground. The lake roads out toward Bean and the Neck take a beating all winter, and the properties along them want minding whether anyone's home or not. There's a stillness to a snowed-in lakeside street that makes an early start easy to justify. Storm after storm, we keep it passable.
