In late October the hills above the Merrimack go copper and rust, and in Bow the work turns toward the last cut of the year — beds pruned back, mulch laid deep, everything tucked down before the ground goes hard. Shampney & Sons Four Seasons Landscaping builds the bones of a yard as well as its edges: retaining walls and patios, fire pits and walkways, cedar and vinyl and chain-link fence lines drawn straight across a slope, light excavation and drainage cut so spring runoff has somewhere to go. Come February the same trucks are out long before dawn with plows down — shoveling steps, blowing out walkways, sanding and salting, raking snow off a roof before it can lean on the rafters. The routes run from Concord and Manchester and Nashua out through Pittsfield, Northwood and Bedford and on up to the Lakes Region and the White Mountains. There is a plain, physical satisfaction in it: a wall that sits level in the hillside, a stone walk reading clean under new powder, a driveway open while the rest of the road is still white.
