There is a week in Amherst when the last leaves let go over the village green and the ground turns from soft to iron overnight — and the work turns with it, from setting posts into the earth to clearing what falls on top of it. Through the open months, The Mailbox Guys run fence line across the Souhegan valley in vinyl, wood, aluminum, and chain link, and stand mailbox and light posts of wood, vinyl, and granite — granite that will still be plumb long after the season that set it. A flag pole goes up straight and true against all that white clapboard. Then the cold comes and the trucks go out to plow, and the walkways get shoveled down to bare stone, so the morning walk to the mailbox is one clean dark line through the snow. Across New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts, it is honest, visible work: things stood upright, things cleared away, a yard that holds its edges all winter.
