Long before the grain trains rattle through on the old Burlington spur, S&L Trenching LLC is working the gravel section roads on Waverly's edges, pushing snow back from mailbox rows and machine sheds so the day's first traffic can move. Out past the last streetlight, the fields lie open and white, broken only by a fence corner or a lone yard light burning against the dark. There's a rhythm to it, blade down, back up, blade down again, that settles into something almost meditative before the rest of the county stirs. By the time headlights start turning onto the county roads for the commute into Lincoln, the lanes are already scraped to gravel, their edges straight as a plumb line. It's unglamorous work done in the coldest, darkest hour, and there's real pride in a road nobody has to think twice about driving.
