About Smith Lawn Care

Sutton's streets run in the same flat grid as the farmland around it, and on a still winter morning Smith Lawn Care works that grid block by block, plowing driveways in roughly the same order the crew mows them come June. Clay County mornings after a snow tend to be quiet in a specific way—no wind yet, just cold sitting still in the air—so the scrape of a blade against a driveway apron is often the only sound on a street for blocks. The company's summer work is lawns kept trim across town; winter simply narrows the same list of addresses down to walks and drives that need clearing before anyone leaves for work. Sutton sits close enough to the low ground along the Blue River that the lowest streets in town ice first, so those are usually the first stop before the grid opens up toward higher ground. By the time the grid's last driveway is cleared, the wind that was absent at dawn has usually picked back up, working against everything the morning accomplished.
