The presses at Courier Times usually finish their run well before sunrise, and on a snowy morning in Sutherland that same early start means the crew is often the first to see how bad the roads really are before anyone else in town backs out of a driveway. The paper's real business is print, but a heavy Lincoln County snow turns some of that same early-morning crew toward clearing walks and small lots around town, work fit into the same pre-dawn hours the presses already keep. Sutherland sits close along the South Platte River valley, near the canal that feeds the power plant east of town, and cold air sits heavy in that low ground overnight, icing over the streets nearest the water first. By the time the paper trucks head out for delivery, the sidewalks downtown are usually scraped clear enough to walk without watching every step.
