The wind gets to Potter first most mornings — it comes off the tableland above Lodgepole Creek before the town has finished waking, and it does not ask permission. K-Lawn works with it rather than against it, mowing in the cool early hours while the grass still holds the night and the light runs long and low across the wheat ground. Out here at four thousand feet turf earns every inch it grows, so a clean cut and a straight edge along the walk read as something close to an achievement. The work is close trimming along fence lines and foundations, an honest string line around mailbox posts, and hauling off the clippings and windblown litter when a yard needs clearing. By the time an afternoon freight leans through town on the Union Pacific line, the lawns along the way are squared away and holding their shape.
