Melnick's Mowing

About Melnick's Mowing

Evening is often when Melnick's Mowing finishes its rounds in Ord, porch lights coming on along the residential streets that run down toward the North Loup River, snow still falling soft and fine under them. The river cuts close to town here, and the streets nearest it tend to hold cold a little longer than the blocks up toward the highway, so this crew learns which driveways ice first and works those early. A clean path from the front door to the curb, cleared before headlights start turning in for the night, is a small thing that matters on a dark Nebraska evening. Snow in the Loup Valley rarely stays soft for long, but a driveway pushed back to pavement and a walk salted against the freeze gives a house one less thing to worry about until morning. That is the rhythm this crew keeps, street by street, while Ord tips into another winter night.
