North of town, Red Willow Creek pools behind the dam at Hugh Butler Lake, and on a July afternoon the wind comes off that water and runs all the way down into McCook. KN Lawn Co works right in it — mowing long passes, trimming around posts and pump houses and playsets, then driving the clippings back into the turf instead of leaving them loose for the wind to scatter. Grass out here grows in bursts after a rain and then waits, so the schedule bends toward the weather rather than the calendar. There is a real satisfaction in the moment the last pass closes and the whole yard turns a single even color. When the leaves start coming down in October, the route runs once more to clear them.
