Lincoln's earliest settlers came for the salt basins along Salt Creek, flats where wildlife once gathered to lick the ground itself, and there's a strange echo of that history in what Z4S Salt LLC spreads across driveways and lots along that same creek valley today. The lowland streets near the creek hold cold air and fog longer than the rest of the city, so ice forms here before it does on higher ground just a few blocks over. A careful hand with the spreader matters as much as the plow does — too little salt and the ice comes right back after the next freeze, too much and it's wasted on pavement that was already clear. Driving back past a lot at the end of a shift and finding bare, dry pavement holding through a full overnight freeze is proof the salt went down right the first time. By the time Salt Creek is fully iced over for the winter, the routes along its banks are running clean and steady.
