Out past the main university campus, the rows of trees and test plots on UNL's East Campus sit quiet under snow through most of a Lincoln winter, and Service Specialists Lawn & Landscaping works the walks and lots along that edge where students and researchers cross between buildings on foot. Open field on one side of the road means drifting is worse here than it is downtown, and a walk cleared at seven can carry a fresh drift by nine if the wind is working out of the northwest. The old shelterbelts planted along these research fields break some of that wind, but they also throw long shade that keeps ice from melting off certain walks until well past noon. Keeping a whole stretch of campus walkway passable through a storm that's shut down half the rest of the city is a specific kind of use those research fields don't usually get credit for. By late afternoon, with lab lights coming on across the quiet fields, the last routes are finished and the walks are dry underfoot.
