The old boulevards south of downtown Lincoln were planted with elms and oaks generations ago, and even bare in January those trees arch high enough over the street to shade the snow underneath for most of a short winter day, which means Luxury Landscape often works these blocks twice to catch ice that never quite gets full sun. Brick walkways cut through deep front yards here, longer than a newer subdivision's, so a single property can mean a real stretch of sidewalk to clear by hand where a machine won't fit between the hedges. Snow lies soft and even under those old canopies, but it hides patches of ice on brick steps that catch a person off guard if they're not checked directly. Finishing a long brick walk and looking back down its full length to see it bare and dry under trees still holding a skin of frost is a particular kind of quiet reward. By the time the last driveway on the boulevard is scraped clean, the light is already dropping behind the bare branches overhead.
