The lake sits low against the neighborhoods on Lincoln's east side, and cold air pools there overnight, so ice tends to form on these walks before it does on higher ground across town. Cutting a clean path around that shoreline loop takes patience — the trail curves with the water instead of running straight, and every turn gets checked for a slick spot the wind might have glazed over. Seeing someone walk a dog around that lake on a morning when the trail was solid ice the night before is the plainest proof the route was run right. Once the loop and the neighboring drives are clear, the crew moves on toward the next block east of the lake.
