About McCandless Backhoeing Inc.

A backhoe built for moving dirt turns out to be just as handy for moving snow, and McCandless Backhoeing Inc. runs its equipment down the county roads outside Lexington where drifts can bury a section line overnight. Fields lie flat and open for miles out here, and wind off the Platte valley will pack a road shut in the time it takes to eat breakfast, so the bucket and blade go to work opening a lane wide enough for a grain truck to pass a pickup. Around the elevators along the rail line, the machine clears loading areas so trucks can still get grain to town when the roads elsewhere are drifted closed. Watching a road that was solid white an hour ago open back into two clean lanes running straight toward the horizon never quite gets old, however many times a winter it happens. Once the last farmstead drive on the route is cleared, the machine heads back toward town under a sky that's usually clearing behind the storm.
