Lexington runs on shifts, and long before the first change at the plant east of downtown, Arevalo Handyman is out clearing the blocks around it so the walk into work doesn't start with a slip on ice. The routes cover older neighborhoods near what old maps still call Plum Creek, where the Oregon Trail once cut through before the town took its new name, streets narrow enough that a plow has to work them slow and careful. Fog off the Platte River bottoms tends to freeze onto everything it touches overnight, glazing steps and sidewalks in a layer that has to be broken up by hand as much as scraped. A driveway left bare and gritted before a family's first car pulls out for the day is a small thing against a whole town's worth of ice, but it's the thing this work actually delivers. By the time the plant's day shift is settled in, the last routes near downtown are finished and the streets are quiet again.
