The first hard frost turns Kearney's lawns the color of straw overnight, and the whole county goes quiet for a while. Johnson Landscape spends that turn on the last cleanups of the year — leaves cleared off, edges reopened, beds emptied so nothing sits wet all winter. It is unglamorous work, and it is exactly what a lawn remembers come April, when meadowlarks are back on the fence wire and the green climbs up out of the ground again. From that first cut onward the round runs weekly: mowing, trimming, edging, straight through to frost. A year is a circle out here, and this is how it gets kept.
