Long before Kearney's stoplights blink on, the yard off the section road is already loud with diesel and the scrape of steel on frozen ground. Ed Broadfoot & Sons Sand & Gravel keeps its trucks parked along the Platte River bottoms, and in January those same trucks carry blades instead of loads, working the farm lanes and driveways between here and the Archway before highway traffic builds on I-80. Frost coats the gravel piles thick overnight, and the crew works it off block by block, leaving bare concrete and packed dirt roads where drift stood an hour before. Cutting a lane straight and clean across a flat field, snow banked neat on either side like a levee, is its own reward after a long night on the road. By the time the sun clears the cottonwoods along the river, the route is done and the yard sits quiet again, waiting on the next storm off the plains.
