At dusk in September the path around the water at Yanney Heritage Park fills with walkers, and the turf beside it has been mowed so often it lies like carpet. The Lawn Builders takes that as the brief: a lawn is made, not found. Their season runs on aeration and overseeding, on fertilization timed to the cool nights of early fall, on weed control that gives new seed room to come in thick. Mowing, edging and fresh mulch in the beds are the finish work that makes the whole yard read as one thing. Out on Kearney's newer streets, where the trees are still young and the sod is still deciding, that patient building shows up first — a deep, even green while the neighbors are still thin.
