Winter turns that same attention toward the driveways and walks those older homes sit on, most of them narrower and closer to the street than anything built new on the edge of town. A school-day afternoon here means kids walking the sidewalks home, and the company times its residential routes with that in mind, clearing walks before the buses run rather than after. Older concrete holds ice differently than new pavement, cracked in places where roots have pushed up underneath, and the crew works those spots by hand rather than trusting a blade alone. What's left is a stretch of old Gretna, elm-lined and walkable, kept clear block by block through the winter.
