South of Gretna the ground drops toward the Platte, a river that spreads wide and shallow across its bed even in summer, and by evening in winter its braided channels carry a rim of ice out from both banks toward open water in the middle. C&J Enterprise works the properties set back along those river bluffs as well as the in-town streets closer to Main, and a bluff-top driveway catches wind the flatter in-town lots don't, drifting shut again not long after a first pass. The company treats each property on its own terms, checking a river-bluff drive twice where an in-town one might only need once. Dusk is often when the second round starts, since the wind along the Platte tends to pick up as the sun drops, packing loose snow back across a drive just cleared. Full dark tends to arrive with the bluff-country drives already open again, Gretna's in-town streets kept passable right along with them.
