Grand Island took its name from French traders who called this stretch of the Platte River La Grande Isle, for the big island the river's channels once carved out of the valley, and Grand Island Tree Service tends the old shade trees around Stolley Park, oaks and elms planted along streets older than most of the houses on them. In the warm months this crew prunes those same limbs; in winter it watches them, because an ice load builds in the crook of an old oak branch well before it ever reaches the driveway below. That same crew turns from branches to blacktop once the snow starts sticking, clearing walks and drives on blocks it already knows tree by tree. A storm here tends to announce itself first as a low creak from an overloaded limb rather than anything visible on the ground. By midmorning the worst of the ice-heavy wood has usually been brought down safely, and the driveway underneath it scraped clear of what fell.
