Everything around here is built on sandstone — the pale escarpment of the Wildcat Hills standing along the south, the ridges that turn nearly white at noon when the sun is straight overhead and the whole valley squints. The Rock Pile works the flat green part of that picture: mowing Gering lawns, trimming the awkward strips beside gravel and stone, clearing the yard debris that collects where grass meets hard ground. Midday out here is hot and bright and utterly still, and a crisp cut lawn against that dusty backdrop is a genuinely handsome thing. The line where the turf ends and the rock begins should be sharp, and keeping it sharp is most of the job. The hills have been patient for a few million years; a yard only needs the week.
