Ackland Construction spends its summers pouring the driveways and parking pads that ring Geneva's courthouse square, and its winters keeping every one of them clear. There's a certain rightness in a crew clearing snow off ground it built with its own hands — the loader that graded a lot in July is the same one pushing drifts off it in January. Fillmore County's farm ground runs flat and open right up to town, so a north wind can pile snow against a building faster than most crews can answer it; Ackland answers early, before the brick storefronts on the square open for the day. Grain elevators mark the rail line on the edge of town, standing over fields gone white and quiet under a Nebraska sky that empties fast once a storm passes. By midmorning the lots are scraped to blacktop and the walks are salted, the same steady hand at work in January that laid the concrete in June.
