Long before center-pivot sprinklers watered the fields around Cozad, an early irrigation canal cut off the Platte River supplied the first farms here, and the ditch banks that trace that old route still ice over first each winter, well before the frost reaches the drier ground away from the water. Werner's Sprinklers spends its summers on the modern version of that same water story, and its winters plowing the driveways and farm lanes of the customers whose sprinkler systems it keeps running once the weather warms again. The ground near the river holds more moisture than the fields farther out, so snow along those bottomland properties tends to pack harder and linger longer than it does on the drier flats toward town. The crew clears yards and access lanes for both in-town customers and the farmsteads out along the river, working the same relationships through winter that keep the sprinklers running come April. It's a full loop of water and cold, tending the same ground in whatever form the weather along the Platte happens to take.
